Andrea Díaz promoted to partnership at Morales & Besa
- Andrea Díaz started her legal career at Morales & Besa some 14 years ago, concentrating her practice in capital markets transactions and regulation. During that time, she has become one of the few female lawyers that is a recognized leader in this field in Chile. Historically the firm has been at the forefront of female participation at all levels of the organization. Andrea’s appointment confirms this trajectory and leaves us with a healthy 36% of women representation at the partner level, an uncommon composition in the local legal market.
“I am very proud to take this step in my career in a place like Morales & Besa, where I have had the opportunity to learn and grow in a field in which historically our firm has been very prominent and that has a low female participation in the local legal market. I am grateful for the recognition of my partners, and of course, of all those who have accompanied and supported me during my career,” said Andrea, who has been recognized as a “Rising Star” in her specialty by the legal rankings IFLR1000 and Legal 500, being one of the two women highlighted by the latter in Chile.
Andrea graduated from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and started her career at Morales & Besa in 2007, although her relationship with the firm began earlier when, as a student, she joined the firm’s Summer Program as an intern. During 2019 in view of the increased volume of advisory work in capital market regulatory work at the firm, Andrea led the expansion of the practice. Her in depth knowledge of the law and ability to lead and train younger associates in the field has undoubtedly to contributed to the consolidation of the firm’s reputation as a powerhouse in the industry and the expansion of its select and loyal client base.
Regarding her appointment, effective July 1st, and the challenges and requirements in the capital markets field, she commented that “undoubtedly the current context is challenging in terms of capital markets, and requires taking advantage of ‘market windows’, executing operations in record time, and supporting clients in adapting their business to regulatory changes that are coming in the near future, especially regarding Fintech and sustainable investment matters (ESG)”. As for her priorities in this new position, she looks forward to continuing to contribute to the firm’s Diversity Committee in which she has been involved for a couple of years; support the training of younger associates; and to work in furthering the development of capital markets and corporate governance practices, where she has also worked actively in recent years.
“Andrea has the full confidence of our law partnership for the excellent and integral person that she is and her outstanding professional accomplishments. Our clients follow her advice and rely on her judgement. For some time now she has been in charge of some of the most challenging and innovative capital markets transactions undertaken by our firm. Just as important Andrea stands out as a true team player and a dedicated developer of young talent. Always happy and willing to share time, knowledge, and experience with our younger associates. These personal and professional traits are a harbinger of the many and important contributions that Andrea will add to the collective goals of our firm”, stated Guillermo Morales, founding partner and head of the capital markets practice.
Myriam Barahona, financing partner, highlights Andrea’s key role in project finance bonds and in insolvency reorganization processes that include capital markets aspects, in a firm with great expertise in project finance and development and in banking and finance. “These are structures that require a high degree of creativity, legal and operational knowledge. With her experience, Andrea also strengthens our firm in financing and reorganization practices, allowing us to offer advice on sophisticated transactions that are increasingly prevalent in the market,” she added.
Throughout her career, Andrea has participated in some of the most emblematic transactions in Chile. Recent experience includes, among others, Enjoy S.A. in several capital market transactions that the company had to execute to implement its reorganization, including the issuance of shares, bonds and convertible bonds (2020-2021); Ruta del Loa (ISA Group) in the issuance of its first project bonds (2021) and the Cencosud Shopping S.A. IPO (2019), the largest offering to date in the history of the Chilean equity capital markets, among others.
